Operating realistically is not something that is defined by the game. If you are interested, it is likely that a textbook of sorts will be released by the alliance some time after the launch
Generally, realism includes fleet, cities, timing, and a couple other things.

Operating realistically is, simply put, to manage your airline so that it resembles the operation of a real-world airline. But people may disagree as to how exactly it is to be accomplished.
By the way, the Mars rover Opportunity has been announced officially dead. The amazing machine was built to last 30 Martian days but lasted more than 6 years or so. After a gigantic sandstorm, scientists were unable to revive he, and thus ends the life of an astoundingly versatile robot. Quite a moving event
