there's a near unlimited amount of money lost in this situation. But for best reasons, this is why numerous of places don't accept bills larger than $50.

Considering an average of 50% margin on goods he lost:

100 taken
100 returned
30 taken
70 in goods takes

So he lost 65USD.

Id argue that as the question is purely how much "money" was lost . As opposed to what value of goods were lost, also, you have made an assumption regarding goods lost.
