Fuel Costs

I've noticed that fuel costs in returning flights are different. For example, my flight to LHR has a fuel cost of 56,022.57 but the same return flight has a fuel cost of 41,360.41. All other long haul flights shows a similar fuel cost difference. Is this a bug or just fuel cost differences cause by tail winds and jet stream things and etc.?(Maybe extra fuel for holding patter due to congested LHR?)

And does fuel costs change with the number of passengers on board?

Fuel is just a random number for each flight.

Eventually I'd like to do something along the lines of airwaysim and have a simulated fuel cost that goes up and down over time, maybe forecasted with exponential smoothing or some other method.
