So this weekend the move process from Istanbul's Ataturk airport to the new airport has began and is heading towards completion. After the move, the Ataturk airport (now with the IATA code ISL) will be closed and used mainly for VIP operations. So we should probably have the now old airport close and change the new airport's IATA code to IST.

The old one won't close and it will actually still keep some commercial operations, just a lot less of them. For example, Lufthansa's seasonal flight from Munich will go to Ataturk, but their year-round from Frankfurt now goes to the new one. So basically just change the old one to ISL and then at the end of 2019 give it the updated pax figures would be my vote.
