Economy plus vs Premium economy
#1
This has always bothered me a bit, having both classes in the game. The original intention was to have economy plus for short-haul or domestic flights and premium economy for long-haul flights. But just due to the demand formula what ends up happening is in order to get max profits you need to include both classes on your aircraft. Personally I've never seen a 5 class cabin layout.

What would you guys think about modifying the demand to favor economy plus for shorter flights and premium economy for longer flights?

Now if you choose to operate premium economy seats on short haul flights, you could still do so IF your ticket prices were similar to the economy plus prices. The bit of the formula that encourages passengers from lower classes to book into higher classes if the ticket price is within their price range is still there.

If I made this change it wouldn't decrease demand, it would simply relocate the premium economy demand into economy plus, or vice versa. Not all of it, just a percentage of it depending on route length. For example a 200mi flight would have minor premium economy demand and a lot of economy plus demand. A 1,500mi route would be somewhere in the middle. And a 4,000mi flight would have lots of premium demand and not so much plus demand.

Also open to any other ideas you guys may have. I just want people to be able to choose how they run their airline without taking too much of a financial penalty because of their choice. Things like bag fees and IFE/IFS will help out those that want to run LCC's in the future as well.

I'd almost rather see one or the other. (Probably premium.) If not, then what you have above would be fine.

Personally i think that demand should be changed tp make it undesirable to to have premium economy on short haul and vise versa or we should just have premium economy in the game. Either if fine with me but i dont think having a 5 class layout is very realistic

Getting rid of Economy Plus is another option. I'd have to look into that though to see if I can just disable it without having to go back and change TONS of code everywhere throughout the game.

Another thing, probably to be included with IFE/IFS, is airlines will eventually be able to have seat options for each class. So one airline may have basic standard economy seats, another airline might have smaller, cramped seats and another airline will have larger seats with more legroom. So that will give more options as well when it comes to cabin layout.

That is something I am really waiting for Smile

Some AF 777-300ERs have 5 classes.
UA will also one day have 4 classes, but with only up to biz.
DL is the same as UA.

Other than that, support.

Also we need IFE/IFS and bag fees. Every LCC I've made is very unprofitable!!!

I think that would complicate things too much.
And I never liked 5 classes, but 4 makes more sense IMO.

I think it should depend on what the user wants. 5 classes is indeed rare in Aviation but it still exists. I wouldn't mind to take out economy plus, it just offers slightly more legroom at most airlines for a little bit of cash.

Well let's see. American has Y Y+ W and J on their 787-9s, and so does delta (but on the A350). Those planes are capable of having an F class as well, it's just that the airlines are ditching it. But having Y+ and W isn't entirely ridiculous

I think it's going to be fairly time-consuming to get rid of Y+ entirely after having a look around the code. I'd have to comment out so many things among various areas of the game. The simpler solution would be to modify the demand like I explained in the first post. I think some time in the coming weeks I will try to implement that change and we can test it out, see how it works.

An idea I had, although it would require a ton of changes to the code so I'm not too keen on it right now lol, is to create demand where every passenger has a "quality" rating that they require. Say on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being basic, bare-minimum economy and 10 being Emirates first class suites. This would replace the class-based system we use now, where any given route has demand for each of the 5 classes. The way it would work is however you configure your cabin layout, each of your classes would be given a quality rating. Passengers that fell into that quality range would then be assigned into that class. But that's a fairly complicated system to make so I'd have to think about it a bit more.
