It is always a calculated risk to start a new route and there are two way to go:
Compete with other airlines on high demand routes and hope you can attract costumers due your pricing and/or service.
Fly routes which you have to yourself or only have very limited competition
Of course most of the time you end up doing a mix of both, but nothing is certain until you fly and than the next fly the following day or week might be twice as profitable or turn a massive loss, stuff happens
One way or the other cancelling flights is never good for your reputation.
