Airbus claims that the A330-800neo is 30% cheaper to operate and saves 8% more fuel than the competing 787. I don't think it is fuel problems or anything. The truth is, the older A330-200 was actually quite popular, so size is not the problem. One main reason is as Soyros said, timing. The other reason is that Airbus actually still sell their A330ceo options, and some airlines actually prefer to order those (it is said that this is due to the relaxed fuel costs of recent years), so the A330neo is selling moderately at best. Efficiency should not be a problem. Airbus and Boeing both claim that their upgraded older aircraft (A330neo, 777X) beat the newer 787 and A350s. So I guess it is down to other strategic factors.
