Essentially you want utilization to be 100%, any more and you pay penalties, any less and you are paying for space you are not using. However it is almost always more cost effective to use dedicated gates, unless you are only landing at the airport 3 times a day or less. Then shared gates are cheaper.
Each time an aircraft lands it uses 1 "slot". dedicated gates give you 10 slots per day, shared gates give you only 1 slot.
