If I schedule a flight and I have very few passengers on board I need to abort the flight. I cannot send the flight and then realize that I have three passengers on board an A-380. I want to know if the flight will be profitable.

Real world airlines don't know exactly how many passengers they will receive, sometimes routes have to be cancelled after only a few months or they are expanded quickly if demand was significantly bellow/above expected.

But you will be able to get an idea of the demand for a particular route based on passenger numbers for the departure and arrival airports. Then you can look at competition and see whether you want to enter that market or not.

That sounds more like what I meant and sounds reasonable.
