OpenWeatherMap.org
I mean they do have paid subscriptions that would solve the issue but they start at $40 per month which is not an option at the moment. I mean it only costs $21 per month to host the entire game. Paying double that for 1 feature doesn't seem worth it.

^ agree. I think this is something that’s better revisiting down the road

Another option would be to only use weather for the most popular airports - say the top ranked 200 or 300 airports. But again, why have a feature if only 15% of airports can utilize that feature.

So I think what was happening is because the weather script takes so long to run (40-50 seconds) the calls would run into the next minute, and cause it to exceed the limit. Still doesn't explain why there were upwards of 300 and 400 calls in a single minute at some points though...
I'll attempt to make some adjustments to see what I can do. But with so many airports in the game it's just not going to be possible to update weather for all of them. Even with an update threshold of 90 minutes (so every 90 minutes weather would refresh) I would still only be able to get through 1,050 airports. There are 1,683 in the game.
They did offer me a 50% discount on the startup plan, so it'd be $20 per month instead of $40. But still... that would double the cost of running this, and despite my lifestyle, Unk is not rich
I think I have to agree with USA that weather delays is something we should revisit later down the road, probably post-release.

How about if the game doesn't use the real weather and instead the game randomly chooses the weather and updates it but each weather type has a certain percentage of happening, e.g. Sunny has a 35% chance of occurring and hurricane has a 0.5% chance of occurring. Idk if this can work, just putting the idea out there

That would probably be possible, only issue would be making sure weather conditions don't appear in places they shouldn't. i.e. making sure snow doesn't appear in Miami and making sure a hurricane doesn't pop up in Frankfurt. Other than adding a list of potential weather conditions to every airport in the game, I'm not sure how I'd acomplish that.
That's if people would even want a weather system that wasn't linked to the real world weather.

Agreeing with USA, 'random' weather would become very frustrating because you wouldn't ever be able to plan ahead (if it snows regularly in Moscow in winter, no 'random' weather would accurately depict this).
Because it's such a time consuming addition it would be better kept down the line.
