Templates for livery design
#11
You add it over the layer for the object you’re painting. So if you want to paint the fuselage, you add your layers above the layer called titled FUSELAGE or FUSE or BASE or BODY. Whatever the blank fuselage layer is. But pair below the BODY_DETAILS layer, or whatever the layer just above the base layer is called in the template you’re using. This way, what you paint will look really good cause it’s below all the detail and effects layers. Don’t use any blending modes - leave everything in Normal or it could go weird. Likewise, if you’re painting the tail, place your layers on top of the TAIL layer and below the TAIL_DETAILS layer. Another tip: if you’re painting something that goes on both the fuselage and the tail, for example a cheat line that turns up onto the tail, then first paint it on top of the fuselage layer so it hangs onto the tail. It’ll look bad on the tail (cause it’s above the details effects) but that gets fixed later. Then when you’re done with the element you’re painting, duplicate the layer it’s one, and drag it down in the layers window so it is between the TAIL and TAIL_DETAILS layers. After this select one of the two layers you just created, right click on it in the layers menu, and click on ‘create clipping mask’. Then do the same for the other layer. This confines it to the fuselage or the tail, making your livery look smooth and professional. Clipping masks are the best part of photoshop in my opinion - play around with them and figure out all the stuff you can do with them. I sort of feel like I might have not explained this process very well, so if you need anything just ask (either here or in a pm).
