Public Image
#1
So the "public image" of your airline will be similar to the airline rating back in CA. But I want it to be more comprehensive than the old rating system was. Your airline rating just went up exponentially as you flew more routes and your airline grew, and after you "unlocked" all the benefits of certain rating thresholds there was really no point to it other than the leaderboards. Image will be different as it will be a value, a percentage between 0 and 100 that represents the public's opinion of your airline. 0% means you suck and 100% means you're awesome.

Image will be affected by various factors, and that's where I want to ask you guys to help a little. What are all the factors that can affect image? What would cause it to go up or down? Here's some things I've thought of but I know there's more.
  • Airline Age
  • Marketing/Advertising spend
  • Network Size (how many destinations you fly to)
  • IFE/IFS options
  • On-time performance
  • Ticket Price
  • Additional fees (do you charge for checked bags? How do your fees compare to other airline's fees?)

How would on time performance be calculated, are we having some sort of weather system or are we going to have to publish are intention to fly a route?

On time performance can be a tricky one. If you mean on-time performance ie without weather and maintenance delays - great! But this would not work relative to a schedule due to (as I think I pointed out in the flight system thread) the real-time nature of the game.

I didn't think about that. I just made a list of things without thinking about the things lol. So maybe on-time performance wouldn't work since there are no "scheduled" flights per se.

Crew should be a big factor, do you hire the cheapest people and put as few people as you are legally allowed onboard, or do you hire the best people and ensure to have ample of staff onboard?

IFS is also things like charge for food and drinks or not, I know a college of mine always checks when he flies to the US to ensure the flight is done by KLM and not Delta because on KLM flights beer is free and on Delta flights you have to pay Tongue

Plane seat options, how good are your seats and how much leg room is on offer. The last one I am biased about because I do not fit in economy class seats because my legs cannot get in there. Also do you charge extra for seats near the emergency exits because those always have more leg room for safety reasons.

Honestly you can go really deep with this, but that would over complicate things, but the above should be logical in my mind.

Id also realy like to have more of the option to go about operating a lcc, ie. the extra cost for the higher rating shouldn't always be worth it. Maybe passengers should pay more attention to the rating the longer the flight?

All good ideas. Hadn't thought of the crew factor and whether or not you opt to use the bare minimum or have a few extra staff on board.

Yes it will be a balance depending on what type of airline you want to operate (at least thats the idea, let's see how well it actually works once I start working on formulas and such). For long-haul flights, pax will probably gravitate towards airlines with better IFE/IFS unless you have enough other factors to persuade them otherwise.

long haul people want service on short haul like inter europe people seem to be fine with sardine cans no matter who they are you see people who earn well into the 6 figures fly easy jet Smile

Is it possible to provide an option in IFE system where the airline can select movies which their customers can watch? I think sometimes people don't like the movies the airline provides in their IFE system. The best movies will cost the airline a lot (comparatively) more than the not so good movies. This can add up to the public image rating (0% to 100%). Better movies, better ratings.

Sure it's possible but I don't know if we want to go into that much detail.
