As you know, major airports cant handle every aircraft that wants to land, currently the game will allow it once you have a gate purchased.
What you could do is set up some sort of lottery, for example an airport may be able to handle 25 wide bodies an hour, of 50 narrow bodies, if there are slots available to purchase, you will need to plan far more your routes. The busier slots will be dearer to purchase, and the not so busy will be cheaper.
