  Demand Model
Posted by: POTKC - 11-08-2016, 03:56 AM - Forum: Game Discussions - Replies (9)

As suggested in the Airport Database thread. I'd personally suggest demand should always stay the same, but slot prices should vary depending on time of day. Consequentially, arrival/departure slot prices should be charged per flight, not leased for some massive sum permanently.

  Political restrictions
Posted by: Unknown98 - 11-06-2016, 08:57 PM - Forum: Game Discussions - Replies (27)

Should we have political restrictions in the game? i.e. if your airline is based out of country A you can only fly routes that begin or end in country A. (Unless an open skies agreement exists, like the EU).

I would guess no, but wanted to check.

  Computer Competition
Posted by: chaitanya - 11-03-2016, 07:08 PM - Forum: Off-Topic - No Replies

I am the I.T. Head of my school. And I am thinking to organize a whole week of activities later this month. Activities I have thought so far are:
1. Website making (html/css)
2. Android app making
3. Game making with Scratch
4. Photography
5. Quizzes
6. Adobe Animate
Can you guys suggest some more activities for students aged between 10 & 16? Activities don't have to be from their computer curriculum so anything you guys suggest would work. I have already planned the Hour of Code event for all classes in December.

  Airports & Aircraft Database
Posted by: Unknown98 - 10-30-2016, 07:44 PM - Forum: Game Updates - Replies (74)

Google form submissions are now closed for airports. Thank you to everyone who submitted data. From this point onwards, airports will be added to the game via a form I will create on the website.

Attached are the databases for the airports and aircraft currently in-game. The aircraft table only has 5 aircraft but you guys wanted to see, so I included it anyways.

A couple things:

I'm sure all the data is not correct. Particularly the yearly passenger and cargo numbers might need to be double-checked. A lot of cargo data is missing because we couldn't find it very easily. It's important that these passenger numbers are correct because it will influence route demand. I've been getting most of this info from wikipedia. Additionally cargo data should be reported in metric tons per year. Good sources for cargo data might be the airport's annual report or wikipedia.

Fuel consumption for aircraft is calculated by max fuel capacity (US gal) divided by the max range (mi). This gives us gallons of fuel used per mile flown, or gallons per mile. So the 737-800 for example will burn 1.95 gallons for each mile flown. Fuel burn in real life is complicated and depends on many things like payload, altitude, speed, wind etc but I think this is an acceptable way to calculate it for our purposes. I'm open to suggestions if you have a better idea.

This is the speradsheet where all this info is being collected (read-only):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

If you would like to add an airport, you can use this form: https://goo.gl/forms/KsT4qJ82KTAuBd7m1
Responses will be reviewed and then added to the spreadsheet.

Skifans also made a map of all the airports, so you can get an idea of what regions of the world need more airports.

  Progress Report
Posted by: Unknown98 - 10-30-2016, 03:37 PM - Forum: Game Updates - Replies (41)

It's been a while since I've posted any updates, so I just wanted to get everyone up to date. The project I've been working on for school will be over on Friday (thank jesus) so after that I'll have much more free time. Well... assuming we don't actually win the damn thing and have to go to finals. heh.

In the mean time I've been working on an excel model for route demand. Hopefully once it's finished I'll have a good demand model/formula working and can implement it into the game.

I also imported all the airports from venture into airline enterprise, so all the work you guys did for that game will live on. Thanks Sufi for sharing it with me Cool I'll post that database if you guys want so you can look through it and see if there's any discrepancies.

Brick Airline shares and holding
Posted by: chaitanya - 10-30-2016, 03:24 PM - Forum: Game Discussions - Replies (2)

Supposing there is a plan to have airline shares:

If and when an airline A occupies more than a set amount of shares in airline B, then airline A can be made (with consent) a board member in airline B. Now airline A can give regular advice and help the airline B in growing. Airline A gets notified of changes in airline A.

Supposing there is no plan to have airline shares yet:

It would be fun having an airline shares system!

Two planes going up in flames in 1 day.
Posted by: Carde - 10-29-2016, 12:02 AM - Forum: Aviation - Replies (2)

Some days are bad and some are defiantly worse.

First off an American Airlines 767 decides to go up in Flames in Chicago, lucky just some injuries and no fatalities on that one.

Then because Murphy can be a b*tch A fedex DC10 (or MD11 can't say) says kaboom and flames and all that stuff at Ft. Lauderdale. So far known crew made it off safely.

Hope that will cover planes going up in flames for the time being.

The 767 seems to be engine related with the FedEx plane it is hard to say could be fuel or a fire in the cargo compartment, at least something said boom with quite some force as it send a piece quite the distance into the air.

747 saved by bell of UPS with 14 firm orders and 14 more options
Posted by: Carde - 10-27-2016, 07:46 PM - Forum: Aviation - Replies (5)

Guess it did not want to die just yet, I guess they are after the long range of these jets.

Anyhow a total of 17 order this year is at the current rate of production good for nearly 3 years, but it is still feels like the last hoorays more than anything else.

I guess the upside is fast delivery because there are so few orders waiting and the twin jets are in high demand for passenger planes so slotting in cargo ones in there might be tricky. Of course many will be converted at some point.

Anyhow the jumbo keeps flying for a bit longer, although the passenger game truly seems to be over and out.

Video The future of London's Airports: Your Thoughts?
Posted by: ryanfairellis97 - 10-22-2016, 12:17 AM - Forum: Aviation - Replies (4)

I don't know about the rest of you but the topic of London airport expansion is a topic that comes up a lot especially in the UK (Where I Live).
It has been a heavily debated topic for many years with several proposals for more runway capacity put forward over the years, including a new HUB Airport in the Thames Estuary, however it has now been boiled down to three possible options that are considered to be best for UK-International trade, job creation and ultimately, most profitable.

Option 1: Extend the existing north runway at London Heathrow, the UK's largest airport. This option would allow aircraft to both land and takeoff from the same runway at the same time.
Option 2: Build a brand new runway North West of the current Heathrow site. This would be the most costly option however offer the largest capacity boost to London.
Option 3: Build a new second runway at London's Gatwick airport. (Personally my favorite option) Unlike both options at Heathrow this will have a much smaller impact on the local environment in terms of air quality and noise pollution. It would also affect the least amount of people, however it is not the favored option among some groups who don't think it will provide as much of an economic boost and increase global connections like the Heathrow options.

Below is two maps of the proposed plans at both airports. At a quick glance I would like to know what option would be most beneficial.

Heathrow is currently the UK's biggest airport and the main transport Hub into the UK. The airport is operating at 98% capacity, with little room for mistakes or delays. The airport currently offers flights to 185 destinations in 84 countries. (Data taken from Heathrow Website)

Gatwick is currently the UK's 2nd largest airport and also operates the worlds busiest single runway airport. The airport helps make 42 million passengers journeys to 220 destinations in 90 countries across the world. The airport is rapidly growing, in 2013 Emirates introduced a daily A380 flight to Dubai, and now the airline operate the A380 between Gatwick and Dubai three times daily. It has also seen budget airlines such as Easyjet and Norwegian grow at the airport. Norwegian now operate flights to New York and LA to name a couple. In 2016 alone WestJet and Air Canada have begun offering daily flights to Canada, BA operating direct flights to New York and Cathay Pacific offering flights to Hong Kong. In addition to this rapid growth BA and Virgin Atlantic are set to offer more international destinations such as Johannesburg in the near future.

Below is two maps of the proposed runway plans at both London Heathrow and Gatwick.

I would love to hear everyone thoughts.....Please leave your opinions below and answer the poll at the top of the thread. Thank You.
